INTRODUCTION
In early February 1940, my father, 1446434 Gunner Philip Brewin, aged 19, embarked with the British Expeditionary Force from Southampton, bound for Le Havre, Normandy. To my knowledge, this was not only his first deployment but the first time he had ever been abroad.
