Topic 11: Reading, Studying, and Learning - Additional Exercises
Practice Application
Practice applying the systems you have just learned to any reading material of your choice. The first few times you apply the systems to technical reading material, they will slow down your reading speed. However, you won't have to spend time going over the material again and again, because you will remember it after that first reading.
Skill Progression
Beginning Stage
Initially, applying memory systems will slow down your reading speed as you learn to form associations and visualizations.
Advanced Stage
As you become proficient, you'll read closer to your normal speed while remembering everything from a single reading.
🎯 Key Benefit
What's more, you will only be reading the material once. The Memory Master systems are applicable to any type of reading matter, and the more technical the material, the more useful the systems become.
Practical Applications
As you read, you can remember:
Business Reports
Facts, figures, and prices in business documentation and financial reports
Historical Novels
Names, dates, events, and places in historical fiction and non-fiction
Medical Journals
Names and applications of new drugs, medical procedures, and research findings
Political Reports
Names, quotations, policies, and statistical data in political analysis
Engineering Magazines
Specifications, dimensions, technical data, and engineering principles
Absolutely Anything!
The systems work for any type of reading material across all disciplines
Advanced Techniques
Page Number Memorization
If you want to, you can even memorise the page number on which a particular quote or fact appears.
Technique
Simply associate a Key Word from the fact or quote to the Peg Word that represents that page number. If you don't have a Peg Word for that particular page number, make one up that fits the page number phonetically - the system will work just as well.
Complete Book Memorization
Taking the idea a bit further, you can associate section headings, diagram numbers and chapter titles to page numbers.
Advanced Application
You can, to all intents and purposes, effectively memorise an entire book this way! This is particularly valuable for textbooks, reference materials, and exam preparation.
💡 Pro Tip
Start with simpler materials and gradually work your way up to more complex technical documents. The more you practice, the more natural these memory techniques will become.
